1972 Opel EFI Conversion

Last Update 10/02/09

  • This car was my first attempt at a restoration of an Opel. I bought this car in Illinois and it was a runner driver in a orange and white two tone that was a bit cooler then it sounds.

  •  I started by dropping the engine out and sanding the entire car to see what issues it had hiding.

  • It didn't take long to figure out what I was up against. Opel GT's are 30+ year old cars and most have rust especially if they are from the north. All in all I was not disappointed in this car, it was pretty much what I expected.

  • I did not take a lot of pictures of this process and I regret that a bit, but I think I have enough to show the process. The engine compartment was cleaned and painted and prepped for the reinstallation of the engine.

  • Here, cleaned and painted with the EFI unit and a header installed, the engine is ready to go back in.

  • Opels remove and install the engines through the bottom which in many ways makes life easier. Sorry for the glare, I did not catch this until it was to late to retake the pictures.

  • Now reinstalled, the hook up and reconnection process began. Also, I had to change the wiring a bit to run the new EFI system.

  • Again, sorry I did not take pictures of the body restoration process, it was in no way different then the other GT projects on this site.

  • What a beauty! This car ran smooth, had reasonable power and turned heads wherever it went. She was a car show sweetheart and got tons of attention and made me some new friends. Sadly I sold it as I had no room to keep it and wanted to get going on other projects. I do really miss it. I have since built a large detached garage so I wont have to sell another favorite car again.
